Stressing
1) Most English words, having 2 or 3 syllables, are stressed on the first sullable.Hầu hết những chữ trong Tiếng Anh, có 2 hay 3 âm tiết, được nhấn vào âm tiết đầu.
Ex: garden , student ( 2 syllables )
gardener, murderer ( 3 syllables )
2) Words, ahving 2 syllables, are stressed on the 1st if they are nouns, or adjectives and on the 2nd if verbs.
Những chữ có 2 âm tiết được nhấn mạnh vào âm tiết thứ nhất nếu chữ đó là danh từ hay tính từ và vào âm tiết thứ 2 nếu là động từ.
Ex: import , frequent ( noun, adj )
become ( verb )
3) The stress falls on the last syllable if the words are ended by ấu nhấn rơi vào âm tiết cuối cùng nếu chữ tận cùng bằng :
AIN : obtain, retain
EE : employee
EEN : canteen
EER : engineer
ESQUE : arabesque
IQUE : antique
OO : bamboo
OON : balloon
ESCE : convalesce
ADE : lamonade
ESE : VietNamese
4) The stress falss on the syllable preceding one of the following endings :
Dấu nhấn rơi vào âm tiết trước những tận cùng sau đây :
ACY, IAL, IAN, IC, ICS, ICAL, IT, ISH, ION, IOUS, EOUS, UOUS, ID, ULAR, UAL, ITUDE, LOGY, LOGIST, GRAPHY, GRAPHER, OGRAPH, ITY, IFY, ETY
* Exceptions (ngoại lệ) :
arabic, catholic, choleric, arithmetic, lunatic, politics, rhetoric, benefit, deficit, impoverish
5) The stress remains unchange if the words are added by a prefix or suffix or both of them.
Dấu nhấn không thay đổi nếu chữ được thêm một tiếp đầu ngữ, một tiếp vĩ ngữ hay cả hai.
Ex: happy -----> unhappy
happy -----> happiness
